Jail House Rock

You are all invited to one of the hottest concerts staged and all you have to do to get in is … commit a crime! Welcome to the Moose Jaw Correctional Centre! You are hereby sentenced to an evening of laughter, good food, great music and you shall all be released right after you pay your tab! Back in 1967, John Storm was one of the finest guitar craftsmen around; they called him the “Guitar Doctor”. When it came to fixing musical instruments he was amazing, but when it came to paying his taxes he was terrible! So, when word got out that the “Doc” was in jail for delinquent taxes, the Man in Black himself… Mr. Johnny Cash called his friend Elvis Presley and the two decided what better way to pay off “Doc’s” debt then by throwing a benefit concert right there in the Moose Jaw Jail? Please join us for Jail House Rock! Featuring the music of Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and a few surprise guests, it’s the best time you will ever have being thrown in jail!

To help us celebrate 25 years in Winnipeg, Celebrations Dinner Theatre is happy to present this 25th Anniversary production of Jail House Rock featuring the music of Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and a few other surprise guests from the 1960s. We have assembled an amazing cast of audience favorites who have performed in many shows over the years and cannot wait to share this encore production with you all!

Over 25 years ago, there was a young man from Moose Jaw who loved the theatre and wanted to create plays for all kinds of folks, plays for the entire family, that celebrate music and laughter. That young man was me and I have been blessed with an amazing career with Celebrations in WPG and our sister theatres, Jubilations in Edmonton and Calgary doing just that. I have had the opportunity to work with so many talented Canadian artists both onstage and behind the scenes and I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them. I also thank our General Partners Janet Cunningham and Doug Stephen for all their support and for this incredible gig for so many years. I now am taking on the General Manager role here at Celebrations, as our fantastic present GM Margaret Coyle moves into retirement. I cannot thank Margaret enough for all her help and guidance as I learn the box office ropes. I also wish our new Artistic Director Bob Cunningham all the best of success as he now takes over the reins and continues our tradition of fun shows for all!

Finally, I thank our audiences for your many years of laughter and support and I look forward to welcoming you all to our theatre for many years to come!

Artistic Director - Bob Cunningham

Welcome to Jail!

We are so happy you’ve joined us tonight for Jailhouse Rock! As you may have heard, this show is part of our 25th Anniversary line up here at Celebrations Dinner Theatre. Yes you read that correct, 25 years! We are so proud to say that we are celebrating 25 years of wonderful shows and amazing performances here in this amazing city! Part of this anniversary celebration includes bringing back a couple of our most popular shows of those 25 years and casting in them some of your favorite Celebrations performers from shows past. So look closely and I’m sure you’ll see some familiar faces!

As the still relatively new Artistic Director here at Celebrations Dinner Theatre I am very happy to say that our former Artistic Director Randy Apostle agreed to hop back in the directors chair one more time to bring back to life this great show that he so successfully brought to the stage some years ago.

So whether this is your first trip to jail, or you are a regular jailbird from way back, sit back and enjoy the show!

Lew Wetherell*, Johnny Cash

Lew is delighted to be back at Celebrations reprising his role as Johnny Cash for this remounting of Jailhouse Rock. This past year saw Lew appear as Sheriff Earl in All Shook Up for the Mayfield Dinner Theatre (Edmonton) and as Dr. Eugene Crowley in the critically acclaimed and extremely creepy production of The Bone House for Murball Productions (Edmonton). Lew has appeared in countless productions for Celebrations and also is a former professional wrestler, performing as the Sin City Strangler for Monster Pro Wrestling (Edmonton). Lew would like to dedicate his performance to Deb, the true love of his life.

Jeff Rivet, Elvis Presley/Jerry Lee Lewis

Hey y’all! Jeff is so happy to be back on the Celebrations stage! You may have caught him in performances Bewitching Elvis, Rock Around The Clock, That’s Dirty Dancing, The Big Boom Theory, Jump For Glee, Mamma Mio, and Law and Order: the Canadian Files. He also performed in Big Boom Theory 2 and Rock and Roll Heaven (but only in Alberta). Also, he co-wrote Mamma Mio: Here We Go Again! With other companies, he’s done shows such as Little Shop of Horrors, Reefer Madness, and Bare: a Pop Opera. When he’s not wrapped up in the theatre world, you can see him on the stair master at the gym, playing Final Fantasy (any version, really!), being a plant daddy, or cuddling on his futon with his sassy cat, Gigi, and his special someone.

Brent Buchanan*, John “Guitar Doctor” Storm

Brent is so pleased to be back on the Celebrations Stage once again and to be working with such a talented group of old friends. Credits Include: Midsummer (Thousand Island Playhouse); Tigers Be Still (District Theatre Collective/Wpg); Johnny Be Goode (Celebrations Winnipeg/Jubilations Edmonton/Calgary); The Tempest, Twelfth Night (Feste –Rideau Award for Outstanding Production), All’s Well That Ends Well, Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth (St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival); Peace, Love and Rock n Roll (Mayfield ); A Christmas Carol (Stage West); Back From the Future (Celebrations Winnipeg/Jubilations Edmonton/Calgary); Lord of the Rings (Mirvish – World Premiere); A Mobile Thriller(World Stage Festival).
Brent also works in production for Wow Hospitality Concepts in Winnipeg and gives guitar and ukulele lessons. Brent lives in Winnipeg with his wife Camille and their baby daughter Charlotte.

Thomas Cliplef, Eddie/Johnny Rivers/Eric Burdon/Roy Orbison

Thomas—a performer/singer/songwriter from Calgary AB—is thrilled to be back at Celebrations Dinner Theatre after playing numerous dead rock stars in the Celebrations/Jubilations production Rock and Roll Heaven. Heaven was nice but he’s in the jailhouse now, rockin’ and rollin’ again in Winnipeg where he is surrounded by his loving extended family, great food, and groovy cast mates. He’s gonna have a good time in jail and he hopes you do too!

Kelly Benzing, Laura, Nancy Sinatra, Petula Clark

Kelly is thrilled to be back on the Celebrations stage after a quick takeover for Star Warz 2: The Farce Strikes Back in Calgary, Ab. Kelly has taken classical and opera singing lessons since she was 5 years old. You may remember her from some of her past shows: Downton Abbey Road, Hey, Pretty Woman, Pirates of the North Saskatchewan III to name a few. Kelly would like to say thank you to Randy, Bob, Peter, the production crew, the ad-cast, and her wonderful cast mates. A special shout-out goes to Kelly's friends and family (Mom...I love you). Tonight's performance is dedicated to her father.

Yanin Gillespie-Cranwill, Penny, June Carter, Dusty Springfield, Grace Slick

Yanin began performing at Celebrations late last century, 1994 to be exact, and has continued through the years appearing in over 15 different shows, as well as co-writing another 4. Yanin hasn’t aged a day thanks to her dark witch powers, and is thrilled to be back performing with so many (old) friends for what will mark the company’s 25th year! Jail House Rock is a call back to old favorites which seems appropriate. So sit back, or hang on to the edge of your seat, really whatever makes you comfortable, and have a great evening of comedy, classic songs, and dancing. Yanin also does all her dancing live, unlike some people who use stunt doubles. See if you can spot them!
Even though Yanin enjoys ALL of the glory and credit, she still (contractually) must thank...
Moffs and Dutch, Scott, Kacey, and Eliotte for all of their support.
